Dear Elizabeth,
In reply to your e-mail, at Swansea we have been inviting diploma
students in the Nursing School to attend award ceremonies since the
incorporation of the School of Nursing into the University under Project
2000. For the last two years we have extended this invitation to other
diploma and certificate students (PGCE) We have a special ceremony
during our degree week which we call the Certificate and Diploma Awards
Ceremony.
In the case of PGCE students, they wear their academic dress which is
associated with their initial degree (which makes for a bit of colour in
the ceremony as many are graduates of other universities as well as the
University of Wales) The diploma students wear a plain black gown and
cap with no hood.
We do not use the word graduand or graduation (or in our case their
Welsh equivalents) but refer to the students qualifying for the diploma
or certificate.
I hope this is helpful. I would be pleased to send you a copy of the
programme for last years ceremony if this would be of interest.
Robert Barnes.
