UWE is ready having had to develop new financial systems to take
account of many more debtors; we have had to redo our student
record systems and fees for part-time programmes to make
invoicing and enquiry management easier; we have developed new
student information for our 5000 strong intake as well as for existing
students; brief admissions staff, develop the Access fund
guidelines and so on. We still have to see what impact all this will
have on recruitment and on the various financial hardship schemes.
If I made just one change for next year, I would scrap the hardship
loan. It will prove expensive to operate for all concerned and when
one considers the very small difference that the maximum sum will
make in the context of a student's large debt, it is simply not worth
the effort.
