A good intro. is Uta-Renate Blumenthal, The Investiture Controversy.
Church and Monarchy from the Ninth to the Twelfth Century (U of Penn.
Press, 1995). I bought it in pb at B&N for $16.95. A much livier read is
Gerd Tellenbach, The Church in Western Europe from the Tenth to the Early
Twelfth Century, trans. Timothy Reuter (Cambridge U Press, 1993). I pd
$22.95 for the pb. Shorter, well-written and still a nice intro. is
his Church, State and Society... avail., I believe, as a U of Toronto rpt.
