Hi,
I edit an educational multimedia e-journal published by the Open University
("JIME" URL below), and co-lead a project developing tool support for
publishing interactive web sites ("D3E" URL). We use D3E to publish JIME
and other scholarly sites in which documents are under peer review or some
form of structured commentary.
I'm new to the metadata community and wary of replicating work already
done, which is why I would appreciate any feedback if what follows
interests you.
I am currently formulating a proposal for a metadata scheme (perhaps to be
embedded in the next generation of D3E), and web infrastructure, that would
enable a researcher to describe a new research document in a more
expressive way. This description would then be disseminated across the web
by distributed servers (similar to newsgroups).
If for example, I proposed a new theory, I would be alerted to (or could
search for) any documents which subsequently appealed to, attacked or
refined that theory.
My proposed metadata scheme would support document descriptions such as:
- a new theoretical perspective T on problem P
- new contradictory evidence E pertaining to the effectiveness of solutions
of class S in domain D
- a new system S used to tackle problem P
- a new system S' derived from S
- a new analysis A derived from theories M and N, of evidence E
underpinning solution S
One could also ask one's client to:
- display the structure of part of a theoretical debate, e.g. all empirical
evidence to support claim C
- display all systems of class S which use a particular modelling notation
N in addressing a particular problem P.
*** My question is do you know of anything similar? ***
I am writing a paper that presents our work and this proposal in more
detail, and would be happy to point you to it when complete, if this
interests you.
With thanks for your time,
Simon
