SHORT COURSE: BASIC SURVEY DATA ANALYSIS I

CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
SCPR and the University of Southampton,
with the University of SurreyCourse Objectives:
To develop an understanding of the basic principles of statistical
analysis.
To enable participants to employ appropriate methods of presenting
data in research reports and papers.
Course Content:
Overview of analysis considerations
Confidence intervals for means and proportions
Setting up and testing hypotheses
Tests of statistical significance
Two sample tests for means and proportions
Simple regression modelling
Association in tables
The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises, and computer practicals using SPSS
for Windows.
Target Audience:
The course is aimed at researchers who need to perform basic analyses
on data from sample surveys, especially those in the social, economic,
educational and medical sciences. Participants should have a basic
familiarity with statistical concepts through a previous introductory
course or equivalent experience. This "refresher" course provides a
good background to the Basic Data Analysis II course which runs from
26-28 January 1998.
Course Materials:
Participants will receive written course notes, copies of overhead
transparencies and a reading list.
The Instructors:
Susan Purdon is a Research Director at the Survey Methods Centre of
SCPR. She is a survey statistician with particular interests in
sample design and survey analysis. Prior to joining SCPR she worked
for the Department of the Environment and Scottish Homes.
Zoe Matthews is a Lecturer in Social Statistics at the University of
Southampton. She has a wide experience of analysing social survey
data and has experience of teaching introductory statistics for social
scientists using SPSS.
Credit Accumulation and Transfer:
Some participants may wish to gain credit points from this course with
the aim of using the credit to contribute to the requirements of a
university degree programme. This course has been approved by the
University of Southampton for the award of 3 CATS points at
postgraduate level. To qualify for CATS points participants will need
to undertake assessed work. Please indicate on the registration form
if you wish to do this.
Fee:
stlg185 (includes course materials, lunches and morning and afternoon
tea). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available
which reduce the fee to stlg45 - applicants must be full-time students,
UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers.
Location:
University of Southampton Main Campus along University Road in
Highfield, Southampton. During the course participants can be

Duration:
The course will begin with coffee and registration at 10.30 a.m.,
lectures begin at 11.00am on Thursday 8 January and end with lunch at
12.30p.m. Friday 9 January 1998.
Preparatory Reading:
Participants who feel particularly "rusty" could skim through any
introductory level textbook on statistical methods. Some examples are
