The Department is part of the Division of Society and Environment in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies. Its purpose, emphasised by the Review Report, is to conduct high quality research on the geographical tr

egion of particular significance to Australia (notably China, Japan, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea), and areas such as Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific in which it has particular research strengths. The School particularly seeks applicants with e

\par }\pard \qj\sa120 {\fs24
The Department of Human Geography was formed in 1968 by the division of the original Department of Geography (founded in 1951) into this Department and the Department of Biogeography and Geomorphology. It has been unique among the Australian Geography de
partments because of its long-term commitment to studying the Asia-Pacific region. During the late 1960s and early 1970s the emphasis of staff and students was on micro-scale research on the cultural ecology of rural communities
in the Pacific and Southeast Asia and on the industrial urban and transport geography of Australia. In the mid- and late-1970s there was a shift to studies of the urban informal sector, regional planning, and development theory as part of a greater inte
rest in Third World studies. This led to research on the spatial expression of development and underdevelopment as the Asia-Pacific region was increasingly incorporated into the world economy.
\par }\pard \qj\sa120 {\fs24 Questioning of development theory during the early 1980s led to
renewed emphasis on empirical matters and related fieldwork, and increased interest in rural areas and populations, and environmental issues. In 1984 a decision was made to reduce work on the eastern Pacific Islands to concentrate on Southeast Asia and
Papua New Guinea. From 1985 the Department devoted a large part of its resources to work on Malaysia within the School Project on the \ldblquote Causes and Consequences of Industrialization in Asia and the Pacific\rdblquote
. In 1987 the Department decided to restructure its
research programs more tightly both topically and regionally. Consequently, it focused staff and student work into two broad groups of issues in the rural and urban fields. The former concentrated on the environmental and resource use under conditions
of global change due to human action. The latter was centred on the \lquote new\rquote
urban geography that followed the 1973 oil crisis and the later impact of information technology. Individuals in the Department have concentrated on the geography of rural developme
nt, and on the related spatial manifestations of rapid industrialisation and urbanisation within the Asia and Pacific Islands region. Recent major projects which have resulted in book-length publications have included work on the spatial economies of Chi
na, Japan, and East Asia generally; the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region; land tenure in the Pacific Islands; rural transformation in Vietnam; and agricultural systems in Papua New Guinea.
\par }\pard \qj\sa120 {\fs24 Although the Department has had considerable continuity
in core staff, it has demonstrated flexibility and progress in making major shifts of emphasis from time to time as critical research agendas have changed. It is important that this flexibility and adjustment to new research agendas is maintained. The
current pattern of retirements in the Department should allow an incoming Head of Department to have some scope to select innovative research directions.
\par }\pard \qj\sa120 {\fs24 In recent years the Papua New Guinea Land Management Project has been an important component of the Department\rquote
s research agenda. This has attracted large research grants from agencies such as AusAID, ACIAR, and through the PLEC program supported by UNEP and UNU. It has completed a major map-linked data base which is now being used, under an ACIAR grant,
for extensive analysis of the consequences of pressure on land.
\par }\pard \qj\sa120 {\fs24 The Department enrolls graduate students for the PhD degree by full-time research. It currently has nine PhD students and a further three whose theses are under examination. Students who are
currently enrolled or under examination come from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Canada and Iceland. Research areas for students include China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, while recently completed theses
also reported on work in the Philippines, Sarawak, and Thailand.

research. In addition to PhD enrolments across the School, the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre and the National Centre for Development Studies provide Graduate Diploma and Master programs in which approxim
ately 170 students are enrolled. The MBA in Asia Program has 35 students. A Graduate School to co-ordinate all graduate study in the University came into operation at the beginning of 1991. Most postgraduate students in the Research School of Pacific a
