			HIGHER EDUCATION CLOSE UP
		An International Conference, 6th-8th July, 1998
		Venue:  University of Central Lancashire, Preston

Jointly hosted by:  Dept. of Educational Research, Lancaster University
		    Dept. of Education Studies, University of Central
Lancashire
	Supported by the Society for Research into Higher Education

This conference gives the opportunity for those involved in
ethnographic-style research on further and higher education to come
together to share findings and to consider methodological insights and
issues.

Keynote presentations will be given by, among others:
Ron Barnett, Rosemary Deem, Gaby Weiner, Mats Alveson, Alan Hurst, Hugh
Willmott, Henry Miller, Sara Delamont, Robin Middlehurst.

Target audience:  Academics, managers, staff developers and others
interested in the substantive insights offered by or methodological
approaches to the fine-grained study of further and higher education
issues.

Criteria for acceptance of papers:
Papers will be considered for inclusion if they:
1) report research results from or reflect on detailed studies of the
daily life and work of institutions of HE in the UK or abroad.
2) focus on the in-depth study of a sub-group (eg. a social/disciplinary
group)  within a somewhat larger number of institutions.
3) address methodological issues relevant to this style of research in
HE
