I've been following the discussion on Jews and books with interest and
only recently remembered that Caesarius of Heisterbach tells a story
about heretics who were winning over many of the populace by their
miracles. The bishop can't debunk them until he gets one of his
clerks to summon up a demon who tells the clerk that it is all due to
scrolls which the heretic have sewn between the skin and muscle layer
under their armpits. The bishop challenges the heretics to a public
showdown, the fire is kindled, the scrolls removed, and the heretics
burnt. Sorry, doing this from memory and the computer lab. I will
try to find the specific reference.
