Dear Elaine,
I've had a chance to check some more references. I did a little work
on the topic myself for a conference paper. The best material I
managed to find was
Berlière, Ursmer. ³L¹Exercice du Ministere Paroissial par les Moines
dans le Haut Moyen-Age.² Revue Bénédictine 39 (1927): 227-250,
340-364.
G. Constable and B. Smith, ed. and transl. Libellus de Diversis
Ordinibus et Professionibus Qui sunt in Aecclesia. Oxford, Clarendon
Press, 1972.
The Libellus, probably written by a canon regular from Liège in the
12thc, actively praises Cluniacs for undertaking preaching and other
forms of pastoral care [pp26/7], with the awareness that he is
involved in a long and convoluted monk-canon debate over whether or
not preaching (in contexts outside the convent) 'properly' belonged to
the office of either.
Best of luck with topic I wished I had more time to investigate.
