I am a professional singer and Professor of Early Music Singing at the
Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik, Trossingen, Germany. I am also a part-time
doctoral student of Royal Holloway and New Bedford College, University of
London, where I am working on the history and social meaning of solo singing in
Italian and French courts from c. 1550-c.1630. The main subject of my study is
the Neapolitan courtier, soldier and virtuoso bass singer Giulio Cesare
Brancaccio, who worked at several courts including those of Henri II, Charles
IX, Francois, Duc de Guise, Alfonso d'Este II and also in Naples, Padua, and
possibly elsewhere. I am also interested in the literary depiction of singing in
the 16th century, especially the poetry of Marino. I have published very little
- in fact one article on Monteverdi and Singing in *Early Music*, 1994, and I am
currently writing the Chapter on renaissance and baroque singing for the
Cambridge Companion to the Voice. I have made many recordings of renaissance,
baroque and modern music as a soloist and also with ensembles including the
Consort of Musicke, Taverner Consort and Red Byrd.
