In some email I had from Markus Kuhn, he says that "in a draft for a new
revision" of ISO 8601, that it is only intended for modern dates in
the Gregorian calendar after 1875. However, a historian I asked said that
they use the Gregorian calendar for dates before this and converted where
necessary.
So, how about:
Dublin Core date elements in ISO 8601 format are defined using the
Gregorian (or New Style) calendar. Dates prior to 1582-10-15 are defined
using the Gregorian Proleptic Calendar. Note that original documents
dated prior to 1927 may use an alternate calendar, depending on the
