NEW POSITIONS IN ITALIAN AND FRENCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
SCHOOL OF EUROPEAN LANGUAGES AND CENTRE FOR LINGUISTICS
Applications are invited for two .75 fractional appointments for two years
in the School of European Languages, commencing in February 1998. The
School, comprising the Departments of French, German, Italian, and the
Centre for Linguistics, has 15 academic staff, of whom 4.5 are in the
Department of French Studies and 4 in the Department of Italian. It also
hosts an expanding interdisciplinary program in European Studies.
ASSOCIATE LECTURER (PART-TIME) (REF: A51/97)
DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH STUDIES
The successful applicant, who should have a Ph.D and tertiary teaching
experience and be a native speaker of French, will be responsible for
teaching predominantly in the area of language, with special emphasis on
courses for third year and Honours students in the advanced and specialist
categories. Experience in multimedia language teaching is desirable. Some
contribution to courses in French culture and/or literature of the late
17th, 18th and 20th centuries may also be required, along with supervision
of Honours dissertations. An ability to contribute to the School's
European Studies program is also desirable. In addition, participation
will be expected in the normal administrative tasks of the Department of
French Studies. The selection process will consist of an interview and a
seminar illustrating the candidate's approach to advanced French Language
teaching.
ASSOCIATE LECTURER (PART-TIME) (REF: A52/97)
DEPARTMENT OF ITALIAN
The successful applicant, who should have a Ph.D in the area of Italian
Studies, and be a native or near-native speaker of Italian with a high
proficiency in English, will be responsible for teaching predominantly in
the area of language, and will also be expected to contribute to the
teaching of Italian literature and culture. Experience in multimedia
language teaching is desirable, as is a capacity to contribute to the
School's interdisciplinary program in European Studies. The selection
process will consist of an interview and a seminar illustrating the
candidate's approach to Italian Language teaching. In addition,
participation will be expected in the normal administrative tasks of the
Department of Italian.
SALARY RANGE: Associate Lecturer Level A $31,636 - $42,933 p.a. (full-time)
(Minimum starting salary for appointee with Ph.D will be $39,996 p.a.
[full-time])

ESSENTIAL
1. Ph.D in French, and applicant should be a native speaker of French.
2. Tertiary teaching experience in French language (advanced and specialist
levels) and in the 20th century field.
3. Ability to supervise honours students.
4. Ability to work in a collegial academic environment.
DESIRABLE
1. Experience in devising and conducting multi-media classes.
2. Experience in administration of an undergraduate course.
3. Academic publications.
4. Teaching experience in the late 17th and 18th century period.
5. A capacity to contribute to the School's interdisciplinary program in
European Studies.
6. Knowledge of a European language other than French.

Italian language.

4. Ability to work in a collegial academic environment.

1. Experience in administration of an undergraduate course.
2. An interest in developing innovative courses within the Department and
School.
3. Ability to liaise with secondary schools, professional bodies and other
relevant community organisations.
4. A capacity to contribute to the School's interdisciplinary program in
European Studies.
5. Knowledge of a European language other than Italian.
