In the ideal world our new staff member would be a cultural/urban
geographer with research and teaching interests that fall under a broad
globalisation "umbrella". Expertise on issues such as migration, identity,
global cities, cosmopolitanism, the cultural industries, cyberspace, or
nature and society would be particularly attractive. While it would help,
the candidate need not have specialized in work on the Asia-Pacific region.
However, s/he should have an interest in conducting future research in the
region, or on linkages between this region and other parts of the world.
Regional language skills would help as well but they are not a requirement.
Obviously the candidate needs to have the capacity to understand and (more
importantly) enjoy working in an Asian (and Singaporean) context. All the
usual details about the National University of Singapore are contained at
the NUS web site: http://www.nus.sg/ . The exact details on salary and
benefits are located at: http://www.nus.sg/NUSinfo/Appoint/TERMS.HTML.
The position would probably start around late June or early July 1998, and
it may be available at either the lecturer or senior lecturer level.
I look forward to hearing from interested people.
Best wishes,
Kris Olds
