Dear members,
Prof. Carsaniga has expressed, once more, his desire that queries should be
posted to this list only if the sender has already made certain efforts to
use the standard resources, such as libraries. I strongly support this view,
on the one hand, but also wish to point out, on the other, that nobody
should restrain from asking a question just because he feels not fully
competent for the area in question and does not know which would be the
specific standard resources to consult. Usually it will be helpful if the
sender lines out which resources he has already tried, and if those who
reply to a query point us to the sources they have used. After all, we are
here to share our knowledge, and to learn from each other, and as long as
nobody makes it a habit to abuse of the generosity of others we should all
be allowed to ask an ingenuous question from time to time.
Cordially,
Otfried
