Dear Julia:
could the saying you mentioned a translation/adaptation of the
popular Italian "l'abito non fa il monaco"? I don't know where the lattter
comes from, but it means roughly the same as "you can't tell a book by its
cover." This is all I can contribute, I'm afraid!
