RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN GEOGRAPHY
With the co-operation and support of the Arts and Recreation
Chaplaincy in the North East, the Department of Geography is offering
a one-year research studentship to carry out a review and critical
appreciation of current literature and thinking on the question of the
future of work. The project will focus on the social implications of
factors affecting future patterns of work, including the social and
ecological linkages of people's occupations and the potential role of
paid employment in the restructuring of industrial communities. One
important aspect of the research will be to help further the Arts and
Recreation Chaplaincy's current exploration of life in the absence of
paid employment. Consequently, as part of the programme, the student
will be required to write reports on particular sections of the work
during the year in a form suitable for reflection and to meet
representatives of the Chaplaincy from time to time to discuss
progress and findings. Funding is available to provide for fees and
maintenance at standard rates, together with some support costs. The
funding extends to only one year but there may be the opportunity,
subject to satisfactory progress, to apply for both University and
Research Council funding and to convert the project to a PhD, in which
case registration can be back-dated. Applicants should have a first
degree in Social Science. Further details are available from Mrs Alex
Barfield at the Department of Geography, Science Laboratories, South
Road, DURHAM DH1 3LE; e-mail [log in to unmask] Informal
enquiries may be made of Professor I.G. Simmons
([log in to unmask]).
