I am Steve Cartwright, a doctoral candidate in medieval history at Western
Michigan University in Kalamazoo. I am working on my doctoral dissertation,
entitled, "The Romans commentaries of William of St. Thierry and Peter
Abelard: A theological and methodological comparison." As one might guess
from this title, I am interested in medieval scriptural exegesis,
particularly of, but not exclusively, St. Paul, at all periods of the Middle
Ages, both Latin and Greek. Most of my work has focussed on the tenth through
twelfth centuries. I am also interested in medieval spirituality, both
related and unrelated to exegesis (it usually is in one way or another),
popular religion, and medieval apocalypticism, and will be publishing an
article in the forthcoming volume, "The apocalyptic year 1000," edited by
Richard Landes, on the commentary on 2nd Thessalonians by Thietland, second
abbot of Einsiedeln (d. ca. 964), in which the abbot makes a prediction
concerning the coming of the Antichrist.
