I am an archaeologist, anthropologist and historical demographer,
with a strong interest in Late Antique and Early Medieval religion. My central
concern is the manifestation of theology and ideology in the material life
of monks and monasteries. Beyond that I am interested in the
development of the church as an organization, and indeed in all aspects of
religious life and experience. My current research is looking at "Celtic"
monasticism in the wider context of early Christianity, with particular
interest in the relation of the material manifestations of Celtic/British
monasticism to the Gallic Church and the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition
I am co-director of the Beauchief Abbey Project (South Yorkshire, U.K)
looking at the social and economic organization of a small
Praemonstratensian house, with particular reference to the differences
between the small houses and the large Cistercian foundations, and
the role of this particular Abbey in the origins of the Sheffield
steel industry.
