Dear all

Re: Cultural Turns / Geographical Turns conference.

As you hopefully all know the Social and Cultural Geography Research Group
is organising a conference on the 16-18th September 1997 in Oxford entitled
"Cultural Turns/ Geographical Turns". We put out a call for papers recently
with the closing date for abstracts today, the 6th June. I am convening a
session on "Nature/Society" and have just been informed by someone who
submitted a paper that my email address provided on the conference website
contains an error; it reads [log in to unmask] when it should be
[log in to unmask] (Isn't technology wonderful!) I hope this has not
presented any problems for prospective paper-givers. However, because of
this I am more than willing to be flexible on the deadline. So If you would like
to submit a paper but thought you'd missed the deadline please do so as
soon as possible. My snail-mail address is at the bottom of this email.

More generally, I have appended information on the conference to this email.
Also visit our website (with all its faults!). The closing date for booking forms
is July 18th 1997. A booking form is also attached to this email which you can
print out.

We would appreciate it if you would pass on this information to anyone else
who might be interested in attending the conference but who is not on this
forum.

Thanks and regards
Simon Naylor

CULTURAL TURNS / GEOGRAPHICAL TURN
16th-18th September 1997, Oxford University

NB: IF YOU ARE WIRED UP TO THE WEB, GO NO FURTHER THAN THIS:
FULL
CONFERENCE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT
www.geog.lamp.ac.uk/culturalturns.

It is some six years since the Social & Cultural Geography Study Group of
the Institute of British Geographers held a major conference - entitled
'New Words, New Worlds' - in Edinburgh. This conference is intended to be
the follow-up, providing a forum both to critically assess the progress of
the 'cultural turn' within and beyond geography, and to showcase recent
work which combines the 'cultural' and the 'geographical' in innovative and
important ways. Also, as with the previous conference, we expect at least
one book to be published from this. The three days in September have been
divided into five themed modules, each made up of one plenary and three
workshop sessions. The plenaries have been filled with invited speakers,
and it is the workshops which we intend to fill via this call for papers.

Modules and plenary speakers
These have been arranged to bring together leading scholars from a number
of disciplines to give their perspectives on the changing relationships
between 'cultures' and 'geographies' in five key areas. The modules and
speakers are:
1) 'Culture & geography': Peter Jackson, Angela McRobbie, Chris Philo
2) 'Popular geographies & the arts': Jim Duncan, John Clarke, Balraj Khanna
3) 'Culture & political economy': Andrew Sayer, Linda McDowell, Daniel Miller
4) 'Nature & society': Jacquie Burgess, Sarah Whatmore, Kevin Hetherington
5) 'Spaces & subjectivities': Gillian Rose, Dave Matless, David Sibley

Workshop sessions:
After the plenary talks in each module, 3 parallel workshop sessions will
be held. Each will contain 3 papers which will both engage with the plenary
talks and provide accounts of other work in these areas. To encourage these
connections, we are providing the titles, abstracts and recommended
readings for these plenary talks in advance. So, if you are interested (and
do not have access to the web), please send your name, address and the
module in which you would like to present to Ian Cook, Department of
Geography, UW Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales SA48 7ED or via E-mail to
[log in to unmask] The deadline for abstracts is June 6th 1997.

Costs:

Full conference package: £80 (waged), £50 (unwaged & postgraduate).
(Both cover registration and B&B accommodation at Wadham College for 16th
