This is an early warning for a major conference taking place this summer
-----Cultural Turns / Geographical Turns----------
It is some six years since the Social & Cultural Geography Study Group of
the IBG held a major conference - entitled `New Words, New Worlds' - in
Edinburgh. This was an early attempt to bring together the various strands
of an emerging 'new cultural geography' within the discipline and, to a
limited, to develop links with other disciplines beyond geography. Last
year, the Group decided to organise a follow-up conference both to
critically assess the progress of this 'cultural turn' within and beyond
the discipline and to 'showcase' recent work which combines the 'cultural'
and the 'geographical' in innovative and important ways. This conference
will take place from 16th-18th September 1997 at Rhodes House, School of
Geography & Wadham College, Unversity of Oxford, as is convened by Ian Cook
(UW Lampeter), David Crouch (Anglia Polytechnic Univ.), James Ryan (Oxford
Univ.), and Simon Naylor (Keele Univ.).
Sessions:
'Culture & geography, past and present', 'Popular geographies & the arts'
'Culture & political economy', 'Nature & society'
'Spaces & subjectivities'.
Plenary speakers include:
Jacqueline Burgess, James Duncan, Peter Jackson, David Matless, Linda
McDowell, Angela McRobbie, Gillian Rose, Andrew Sayer, David Sibley, and
Sarah Whatmore.
Workshop sessions:
After plenary talks in each session, parallel workshop sessions will be
held for presentations which are both responses to these talks (summaries
of which will be available in advance of the conference) and accounts of
other work in these areas. A call for these workshop papers will be
circulated at the start of May.
