Dear all,
I have followed with interest the postings on liturgical combs, the one in
Durham being most familiar (and accessible) to me. I would like to point
out that a very fine ivory comb, now in a museum in Cologne (and
unfortunately with a fragment lost), is illustrated in <Ornamenta
Ecclesiae: Kunst und Ku"nstler der Romanik in K"oln> (3 vols, Cologne,
1985), vol.2 pp.324-5 (number E92) with a description on p.326. It is
reputed to be the comb of St Heribert, from the second half of the 9th
century, and has one set of teeth only, surmounted by an elaborate carving,
on one side, of a crucifixion scene, and on the other, of swirling foliage.
Is there any consolidated list of such survivals?
Cheers,
Brian Donaghey
