I am Professor of French and Italian at the University of Washington,
having taught previously at Yale, Montreal and Emory University. My
concerns are comparative, having worked in the histories of rhetoric and
semiotics and their connection with literature, from Augustine to the rise
of Humanism. My present work involves the cults of relics and icons in
medieval literature-- the connection with Italian being through Dante. I
am working specifically on Dante's Paradiso and Byzantine art in Ravenna.
I have another project going on the 4th-5th century shrine-builder and
poet, Paulinus of Nola.
