This proposal must be resisted as strongly as possible. It is typical of
those who know nothing of A-level business studies that they could
possibly consider it vocational. It has vocational aspects, but so do
many other subjects. It is a natural to fit in with a widened choice at
post-16 and would be a very popular AS I would think.
It was only this year that Liz Francis at SCAA was making reassuring
noises about the future. How can they possibly remove a subject
from the post-16 curriculum which has more than 30000 entries and
rising? This is just what happened to business studies in the Nat Curr
of 1988, and yet everyone goes on about the need to educate young
people for the world of work (I use the work educate, not train,
deliberately). Frankly, I despair.
GNVQ business has a place which IS vocational and I support it, but
A-level business studies asks different, very important questions and
requires students to acquire different and important skills. Evidence
of both can be produced from past exam questions and papers if
necessary.
Can the exam boards be activated on this issues? Some eg UCLES/AEB
have a lot to lose I would have thought.
