>EUROPEAN CONFERENCE of Folk Music and Dance
>Folk music is an identifying feature of every region, as well as a
universal artistic language. It lies at the heart of Europe.
>Though it may have its roots in a very specific local culture and history,
so contributing to a flourishing cultural diversity, it is also flexible
enough to contribute to a fertile dialogue between these differing cultures.
>Folk music is therefore the one area of the arts most capable of meeting
the aims stated in the Treaty of European Union (Article 128 on the arts)
which is to help "the cultures of member states to thrive, while respecting
their national and regional diversity, and at the same time displaying our
common cultural heritage" and to create an "ever-closer union between the
peoples of Europe".
>Increased co-operation in this field at the European level seems to us all
the more important because European cultural diversity (and so the
life-blood of folk music) is increasingly threatened by the spread of
commercialism (transforming all culture into a marketable commodity) and its
counterpart, cultural uniformity.
>This is why the FAMDT (Federation of Folk Music and Dance Societies) after
long experience in this area, is proposing to organise a European Conference
which will be an opportunity to:
>- get an update on each of the European states
>- share problems and suggest lines of collaboration in the following areas:
>research and documentation, training, live performances, information,
>
