I am Language Assistant at the Italian Department at Royal Holloway, University
of London. My main research interest has been so far in literary products
intended for music - i.e. opera, but also secular vocal music and courtly
entertainments. I have worked on Ottavio Rinuccini (1562-1621), the creator of
opera libretto. My PhD has focussed on Claudio Monteverdi's reading and use
of the poetic texts in his madrigals (1605-1617). I am at moment working on the
libretto of 'Cosi' fan tutte', trying to understand what Da Ponte had in mind
when writing the libretto (just a farsa, just an opera buffa, or a satire, a
piece where irony replaces comicality?). I am also interested in trying to see
how far Mozart's score responds to the libretto, if and how much theatrical
convention are limiting and directing the librettist and the composer.
Although late Renaissance and early Baroque have been my area od
specialization, I feel that my priority lies on issues relating poetry and
music, with space left for different periods. Italian opera and Cinema are also
my interests, though I am not doing active research on them.
