dear Carolyne
I don't know if this is any help, but the Candlemass procession is one
date and ritual used for the performance of public penance by heretics in
the south of France (possibly other sinners too, and other places, but
i'm sticking to my particular area here!); there is therefore a sideways
looking description of the *probable* procession in legislation relating
to this public penance. ONe can look at the relevant canons in the
council of Beziers (1246) in J.D.Mansi Sacrorum Conciliorum ... v.23 (i
think); and descriptions (with useful footnotes) in H.Maisonneuve *Etudes
sur les origines de l'Inquisition* (1960)
I can give you more detailed references if you desire; but I'm not sure
if this area is actually that helpful for you ...
cheers
