***Diasporic Futures, Global Times & 'Post'-coloniality***
A Two Day Multidisciplinary Conference
22 - 23 March 1997
Dept. of Cultural Studies, University of Birmingham
CALL FOR PAPERS
This major conference asks a number of questions: What sorts of futures are
possible with the study of 'Post'-colonialism and Diasporas? What are our
understandings of the concepts of Diaspora and 'Post'-coloniality and their
ensuing cultural, social and political forms? How useful are these concepts
and related notions of difference, diversity, multiculturalism as well as
notions of inequality, exclusion and repression to deal with
transformations in the late modern world? Can the studies of Diasporas,
ethics and morality, politics and economics enhance alliances with and
through the centre countries and the developing world? What possibilites
are there in Diasporic futures? What are the prospects of universalism for
inducing or hampering positive change and growth in developing societies?
How are Diasporas and the Post-colonial condition implicated with processes
of globalisation? The organizers welcome proposals for papers from any
discipline in the following themes:
'Post'-colonial Representations, Literatures and Diaspora Aesthetics
Multiple Diasporas and the Post-colonial Condition
Pedagogy and Global Cultural Politics
Science and New Technologies: Development and Inequalities?
Economies of Scale
Cultural Identities, Social Forms and Organization
Engendering Diasporas and Globalisation
Histories of Colonialism
