Dear Pippa,
Let's hope German is one of your strong-points. As far as I know the best
introduction - not only for the medieval period - is:
Arnold Angenendt, Heilige und Reliquien. Die Geschichte ihres Kultes vom
fruehen Christentum bis zur Gegenwart, Muenchen 1994.
There is a lot of interesting material, especially for shrines and
everything connected with the `material' part of relics, in:
Anton Legner, Reliquien in Kunst und Kult: zwischen Antike und Aufklaerung,
Darmstadt.
Richly illustrated - for instance the `Golden Chamber' in the church of St.
Ursula in Cologne, filled to the brim with relics - and in your case
relevant, because it also deals with modern artists working with relics and
the display of it in museums:
Anton Legner ed., Reliquien: Verehrung und Verklarung. Skizzen und Noten zur
Thematik und Katalog zur Ausstellung der koelner Sammlung Louis Peters im
Schnuetgen-Museum, Koeln 1989.
Good luck, Bram van den Hoven van Genderen
