I, too have been a lurker for a few weeks. I am writing a PhD on
discourses of space in Cistercian monasteries (particularly re. the
Yorkshire houses in the 13th century). In response to the query on Aelred,
yes there is a translation in John Boswell's, (I think ) The Kindness of
Strangers -
haven't got the full ref., I'm afraid, but it should be easy to find! You
might also keep an eye out for a forthcoming article in Comitatus by
Elizabeth Freeman - which promises to discuss the hapless nun of Watton.
Am I alone in thinking that Aelred spends a rather disproportionate
amount of time reporting the more horrific elements of the event - maybe
I'm overeading it, but he seems to be rather enjoying it...
