In the hope I'm not taking too much time & space on Theodard & the brigands,
let me thank the respondents to my posting and try to more clearly make my
point that even if the Bollandists thought it incredible that robbers could
quote Horace, it is possible to imagine circumstances in which said robbers
might have done so. I agree that tenth-century hagiographers put words they
considered appropriate in speakers' mouths - as did chroniclers - & used
quotable tags from classic authors in this fashion. Yet shouldn't we beware
of assuming that they always did so?
