SCGRG reading meeting on the theme of
GEOGRAPHY in CULTURAL STUDIES in GEOGRAPHY
10 -11 September 1996, University of Wales, Lampeter
CALL FOR READINGS
With recent edited collection by 'cultural geographers' (e.g. Pile and
Thrift's Mapping the Subject) being labelled as texts in 'cultural studies'
and with recent edited collections by cultural studies people (e.g.
Robertson et al.'s Traveller's Tales) being labelled s 'cultural
geography,' the time is perhaps ripe for our reading meeting this year to
address issues concerning these crossovers and connections. At this stage,
we have a theme, a place, dates an a price (see below). What we would
appreciate in the meantime, though, are suggestions for readings which
would prompt some quality debate on this issue. What might by key chapters
in books such as the above? What reviews of these books have appeared
which do and do not 'cross the divide' (which, no doubt, isn't one)? What
other book chapters and articles directly address the problems and
possibilities of such crossovers? What basic writings can explain to
'geographers' what 'cultural studies' might be in the first place, before
we discuss what forms these crossovers might and do take? If any spot-on
readings spring to mind of you the reader, please communicate them to us by
August 1st at the latest (with some indication of their contents and
appropriateness) so that we can put a reading package and timetable
together in plenty of time. Thanks in advance.
Arrangements: final details will be circulated with the readings, but the
more organised discussions will take place on the 10th and 11th of
September, allowing plenty of time on the 9th for people to find Lampeter.
Discussion on the 11th will finish by lunch allowing people time to escape.
As before, time will be taken to experience the locality in an informal
manner. At this stage we estimate the cost per person to be £35, a figure
which includes two nights accommodation, two hearty breakfasts, rides from
the train stations and back and copies of all the readings.
