My reading on Dominican nuns was done many years ago, but there is
another early house, in Italy, at Bologna. Jordan of Saxony's letters to
Dian d'Andalo, who insisted on joining over familial opposition, have
been translated into English. There, as at Prouille, the creation of an
acceptable outlet for devout women seems to have been a success. Where
this fits into the larger pattern of the period is exactly why I raised
the question. My impression is that any such outlet was likely to be
popular, but most of my work is done later and on papalist polemic.
