I agree competely with Mike Crang's response about 'either/or', and would like
to complement it by saying that it is possible to do 'both/and', or some mixture
of both. For example, people who prepare papers, if this is what people want,
can 'post' them to both conference participant, subscribers to this forum,
'lurkers' and anyone else via this, and other, email networks... this, I hope,
would not detract from the conference itself, but add to a sense of its
(imagined) constituency.
Exclusions and issues about funding are always a problem -- but I think that
this is a worthwhile event, whether I can go or not (and I fully intend to, as
do many at the OU). Like Mike Crang, I support this 'activity'... this amongst
others.
