I am a Canadian who got my PhD from Glasgow University, and I would very
much agree that "hands off approach" is the key phrase. You need to be
hugely self-motivated, which is sometimes difficult if one is used to
constant evaluation and deadlines. There are certainly pros and cons. I'm
glad I went to Glasgow, as it allowed me to do my best work (I do Scottish
history), but I think I took a risk, however calculated. A lot of factors
are involved. Please write to me privately for further elucidation.
