In reply to above request re. conference on 'The Virgin Mary:
Representation and Devotion in Britain'! The programme for the conference
hasn't been finalised yet: Sarah and I will be meeting on May 1 to decide
its final shape. The following is a rough indication of who will be/is
likely to be speaking and their topics. I've included snail-mail addresses
where I have the information, though I don't think many of the
paper-givers are on e-mail. Sarah is likely to have more information, but
she's not on e-mail and is currently away for Easter.
Confirmed:
Sheridan Gilley, Abbey House, Palace Green, Durham Univ., DH1 3RS, 'Sacred
Monarchy and the Virgin's Dowry: The Wilton Diptych'.
Cathy Oakes, The Rectory, Yatton Keynell, Chippenham, Wilts, SN14 7BA,
medieval English wall-paintings depicting the Virgin
Simon Coleman, Dept. of Anthropology, Durham Univ., DH1 3HN,
representations of the Virgin Mary at Walsingham from the medieval period
to the present
Philip Endean, 7 Park Road, London NW10 8TB, London, 'Mary in the Writings
of Gerard M. Hopkins'
Gerard Lally, 122 Tirellon Heights, Headford Rd, Galway City,
Ireland,'Type and Antitype: The Madonna in Mid-Victorian England'
Carol Marie Engelhardt, Dept. of History, Ballantine Hall 742, Indiana
Univ., Bloomington, IN 47405, '"Monstrous Fiction" and "Daring Blasphemy":
Anglican Responses to the Declaration of the Immaculate Conception, 1854'
Probables/Possibles:
Pam Graves, Dept. of Archaeology, Durham Univ., representations of Mary in
medieval churches and liturgies
Lawrence Moonan, 'Potuit, decuit, ergo fecit: an instructive argument'
Edward Yarnold, 'Marian Dogma and Plurality of Expression'
Rosie White, representations of the Virgin in the novels of Michele
Roberts
Sarah Boss, Marian Study Centre, the virgin in contemporary
English 'classical' music
We're hoping to put the pieces together into an edited volume, and I hear
from Sarah that Eamon Duffy (Cambridge Univ.) has an idea for a paper he
might be contributing for the book, though he can't make the conference.
The conference, as I mentioned, is on June 8 at Sarum College, 19 The
Close, Salisbury, Wilts. The cost is £15 (excluding lunch). If you'd like
to come and/or wish for more details please contact Dr Sarah Boss, Marian
Study Centre, Department of Theology, LSU College of Higher Education,
The Avenue, Southampton SO17 1BG, tel. 01703-228761; fax 01701-230944.
Best wishes,
Simon
