SHORT COURSE on HANDLING NONRESPONSE
17-19 June 1996
University of Southampton
Chris Skinner, Pam Campanelli & Peter Lynn
Centre for Applied Social Surveys
Course Objectives:
o to provide participants with an understanding of the different types
of nonresponse in surveys
o to instruct participants in methods for
reducing nonresponse at the data collection stage
o to instruct participants in statistical methods for compensating for the effects
of nonresponse at the data analysis stage
Course Content:
o types of nonresponse
o factors which affect nonresponse
o methods for reducing nonresponse
o weighting to compensate for unit nonresponse
o imputation for item nonresponse
o modelling approaches to nonresponse
The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises. There will also be an informal
session on the evening of Monday 17 January at which problems faced by
participants in their work may be discussed.
Target Audience:
The course is aimed both at researchers who design surveys and wish to
reduce nonresponse and at researchers who analyse survey data and wish
to compensate for the effects of nonresponse. Participants may be
researchers in the social sciences or may work on survey applications
in government or the private sector. The course is suitable for
statisticians or for social scientists who have a basic familiarity
with statistical ideas of estimation in surveys.
Course Materials:
Participants will receive copies of overhead transparencies and a
reading list.
The Instructors:
Pam Campanelli is a Research Director at the Survey Methods Centre of
SCPR. She specialises in research on survey instruments, data
collection and interviewing techniques and regularly teaches in this
area. She runs a major ESRC-funded research programme on non-response
and interviewing techniques. Prior to joining SCPR she worked on
large-scale surveys at the University of Michigan, the US Bureau of
the Census and The British Household Panel Study.
Chris Skinner is Professor of Social Statistics at the University of
Southampton and Director of its Centre for Survey Data Analysis. He
is currently Vice-President of the International Association of Survey
Statisticians. He has acted as a consultant on non-response problems
and has conducted research on model-based methods of correcting for
nonresponse. He has copresented courses on Dealing with Nonresponse
for the Statistical Office of the European Union.
Peter Lynn is Deputy Director of the Survey Methods Centre of Social
and Community Planning Research. He specialises in sampling
techniques for surveys and in postal survey methodology. He is well
known for his expertise and practical knowledge of survey sampling
issues and teaches many courses in this area.
Fee:
stlg 400 (includes course materials, morning and afternoon tea and all
meals, accommodation for Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 June). Because of
ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available which reduce the fee
to stlg 195 - applicants must be full-time students, UK academic staff
or ESRC-funded researchers. Fees for local participants not requiring
accommodation are available on application. Please note that meals
and accommodation form the major component of the fee.
Location:
Chilworth Manor Conference Centre, Chilworth, Southampton, Hampshire
SO16 7PT, Telephone: 01703 767333.
Duration:
The course will begin at 11.00 a.m. Monday 17 June and end at 12.30
p.m. Wednesday 19 June 1996 (followed by lunch).
Preparatory Reading:
For participants who wish to do general background reading, Chapters
6-8 of the following book are recommended: Lessler, J.T. and
Kalsbeek, W.D. Nonsampling Errors in Surveys, 1992, New York: Wiley.
The second part of the course on statistical methods for compensating
for nonresponse will be more technical than the first part and
participants with more limited statistical background may benefit from
preparatory work. A useful introduction to the second part of the
course is provided by: Kalton, G. Compensating for Missing Survey
Data, 1983, Ann Arbor, MI: Institute for Social Research, University
of Michigan.
A limited number of copies of this 157 page monograph are available to
those registering for the course at a price of stlg 14.
Participants who are not familiar with classical estimation methods
for sample surveys may also benefit from studying beforehand an
introductory text such as: Barnett, V. Sampling Survey: Principles
and Methods, 1991, Edward Arnold.
Notes on Accommodation:
The conference centre provides accommodation of a high standard
(equivalent to 4 star) and this is included in the course fee on the
nights of Monday 17 June and Tuesday 18 June. For those wanting to
stay overnight on Sunday 16 June and/or Wednesday 19 June,
accommodation is available at stlg50 per night including breakfast.
Notes on Deadlines and Refunds:
Course places are limited and early completion of this form is
recommended. Payment must be made by 7 days before the course. No
refunds can be made for cancellations made later than 7 days before
the start of the course.
The Centre for Applied Social Surveys is an ESRC Resource Centre
hosted by the SCPR and the University of Southampton, with the
University of Surrey.
