In response to Jo Norcup's message, and the piece on using RGS for
teaching by Jo Sharp, one of the 2nd year essays for Birmingham
geography students on their 'Philosophy and Methods' course is the
following:
'We call upon the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of
British Geographers) to end the Shell Oil Company's position as
corporate patron immediately'.
In the face of this motion, recently carried at the RGS/IBG Annual
Conference on the 5 January 1996, is it true to say that the ideals
of the journal Antipode are still 'alive and kicking'?
Students have received a lecture on radical geography and Antipode's
historical role within it and have been referred to the
journal's 1st and 25th year editorials. In addition, those who want
to have been given details of how to join the e-mail forum and have
been using CD-ROMS to scan newspaper articles which appeared around
the time of the conference and since. An 'archive of discussions'
as mentioned by someone previously would be a good idea in this
respect also.
Essays are yet to be submitted and this is one of a wide choice of
options so it will be interesting to see how many of the students
chose it or just joined the forum anyway. I must admit that i do not
expect large numbers to have done so but 'we can but try'.
