To add to the discussion about voice recognition:
Kurzweil VoicePad Pro is NOT difficult to install. You put in the CD and
click next next next next etc and it takes 30 secs.
What is very occasionally tricky is the sound card - and this could apply to
any voice system. No voice system can auto adjust for every type (around
700) of sound card. Personally I NEVER find it a problem. Problems are
caused by not reading the tiny manual andnot clicking Help. Or not calling us.
IBM Simply Speaking is good out of the box but is only Win 95 P100+ and does
not allow menu and dialog access. I find correcting fiddlesome, more so as
the system lags behind.
It does not come with a very good set of on-line editing and formatting
commands. And it starts off with 22 000 words. New words must be spelled in
completely - difficult for dyslexics.
VPP draws from 200 000 and, as new words are said, it often only needs the
first two letters to finf the right word - spelled correctly.
I have always found KV the most stable of recognisers with the easiest but
most sophisticated correcting mechanism.
Generally I find Dragon too complicated. I did most of the meaningful UK
beta testing for Dragon. We dropped the product some months ago.
I have to say that major PC manaufacturers, retailers, chaoin stores, and
catalogues have all, so far, chosen VPP instead of IBM or Dragon. Harrods etc
Check the Sunday papers (8th) for adverts by Innovations.
We also produce a good add-on pack for VPP - a brilliant mic, loads of extra
commands, and lifetime support. Our WWW tech is very comprehensive and
should help anyone in the evenings or at weekends.
IBM give just 30 day support.
