Hi,
The final item on the News At Six on BBC 1 was about today's solar eclipse.
Fortunately, the presenter, Sophie Raworth, did NOT refer to it as
"the last eclipse of this decade", as several other people have done,
but she did make what could be regarded as an even greater blunder ...
Here's the text of the report:
"People in some parts of the world have been watching the last solar
eclipse of the year. It was visible across much of the Middle East
and South Asia, where people witnessed the annual solar eclipse. It's
also known as a 'Ring of Fire', where the Moon doesn't completely
cover the Sun."
An "annual" eclipse would be one that takes place EVERY year.
This was actually an "annular" eclipse, in which the Moon's disk is
slightly smaller than that of the Sun. This is due to the relative
distances of the Earth, Moon and Sun, and the result is that when the
Moon is directly in front of the Sun, there is still a ring - to use
the Latin work, an "annulus" - around the Moon.
You can watch it on iPlayer at
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000csnb/bbc-news-at-six-26122019
The report starts at 15m33s.
What can't be determined is whether Ms Raworth miunderstood the script
- or mispronounced it - or whether it had been incorrectly described
as an "annular" eclipse.
However I can be pretty sure that I'm not the only person to have
noticed the slip-up.
Regards,
Jerry
