Description: The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks to hire a 3D Animator in the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor for a full-time tenure track/tenure-eligible appointment beginning August 2020. This position will serve undergraduate students in the new BFA concentration in Animation and contribute to the School of Art’s highly ranked MFA program.

About the School of Art Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States, and situated in the Sonoran Desert, the school supports a broad range of art practice and inquiry. Programs within the School of Art lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art with concentrations in art history, art studies, museum studies, fashion; an online BA in art history; Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with concentrations in art education, drawing/painting, ceramics, fibers, intermedia, photography, printmaking, sculpture/metals/woods; Master of Arts (MA) in Art with concentrations in art history or art education; and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art. The new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art with a concentration in Animation prepares students to excel as animators and media artists within the realms of fine arts, design, cinema, television, games, online media, augmented and virtual reality, scientific and data visualization, robotics and other emerging fields. Course instruction modes include hybrid, online and in-person. This degree provides a world-class visual arts training in 2D and 3D animation, observational drawing, two and three-dimensional design, concept development, and film/video production. Animation courses focus on an aesthetic, technical, conceptual, theoretical and historical understandings of animation. A focus on skill development is balanced with an attention to professional practices, and conceptual and analytical thinking, contextualized through courses in history and theory. The position will serve undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Art. We seek candidates with rich and varied skillsets in the field of animation. The successful candidate is expected to assume a lead role in the new program’s launch, which includes course development and curriculum management. The successful candidate will actively participate in the MFA and BFA degree programs and pursue a research agenda related to their expertise. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to formulate and instruct a variety of course offerings on both undergraduate and graduate levels, including studio, seminar and lecture courses, and mentoring graduate student thesis projects. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and expertise using the software application Maya, specifically 3D computer modeling, animation, texturing, lighting, rigging and visual effects. Additional responsibilities include student advising and service to the School of Art and curricular program.

Required Qualifications: • Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent terminal degree;  • Evidence of sustained professional activity;  • Demonstrated potential to achieve national or international recognition in creative research;  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university/college level;  • A body of work that demonstrates expertise in 3D computer modeling and animation;  • Demonstrated evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion  

 

Desired Qualifications: • Ability to teach all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses in 2D and 3D computer animation;  • Experience developing a program of study in animation;  • Experience developing and teaching online or hybrid courses; • Demonstrated knowledge of critical thinking and visual literacy;  • Experience chairing and serving on MFA thesis committees;  • Record of securing grants and/or external funding; • Three years of college-level teaching experience beyond TA work
