Post Details:
This is an exciting opportunity to join sigma, Coventry University's award winning mathematics and statistics support service, the leading provider of such support in UK higher education. With a new larger drop-In Centre, which opened in September 2019, sigma typically receives around 17,000 student visits a year, offering help and support with mathematics and statistics to all students and staff across the University. Sigma is also internationally recognised for its scholarly approach to mathematics and statistics support; work in this area is led by Professor Duncan Lawson, who was recently awarded an MBE for services to mathematics in higher education, and Dr Alun Owen who co-leads the sigma-Network's Special Interest Group in Statistics Support. Our staff regularly publish and present at conferences and deliver professional development workshops.

The post-holder will be an integral member of sigma's Statistics Advisory Service (SAS), contributing to drop-in statistics support sessions, as well as offering more in-depth support via one to one appointments with undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking project work or with PhD research students and staff. The post-holder will also contribute to the continued development of a suite of statistics workshops run by the SAS team for postgraduate students. There would also be opportunities to design and develop new learning resources in statistics and to explore innovative ways of providing statistics support. We are particularly interested in candidates who have expertise in using technology to support learning. Although sitting outside the University's Faculty structure, sigma has reciprocal links with the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics, which means there may be opportunities for the post-holder to contribute to undergraduate teaching in the mathematical sciences. The post-holder will also be expected to engage in research, which may be in any area of statistics, including statistics support or statistics education more generally, or as the statistics expert collaborating with colleagues in other subject disciplines.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in statistics or a related subject, along with a background knowledge and interests covering a broad range of subjects which will allow them to provide statistics support in a number of subject areas across the University. Familiarity with statistics software is also required (Coventry University mainly uses SPSS and R). Whilst experience of providing statistics support is desirable, far more important is that applicants have a genuine vocation for helping others to learn, an ability to communicate well across a wide range of degree levels and student abilities, and a willingness to work as part of a team.

While the appointment is expected to be full time, we would consider applications from individuals who would prefer a fractional contract, typically 0.5 full time equivalent.
