Springer Nature in association with the British Library is delighted to host a free event which will explore how Open Research can support researchers with developing solutions to meet the UN’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and tackle today’s global challenges such as climate change, poverty and ensuring health and wellbeing.
Speakers include Mark Hahnel, CEO Figshare, Dr Daphne Ezer, Dr Anjali Mazumder and Dr Kirstie Whitaker from the Alan Turing Institute, Philip Eagle from the British Library and Dr Ed Gerstner Springer Nature. Presentations will be followed by an interactive panel discussion on the importance of Open Research to citizen science and SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in solving these big questions.
Presentations will be as follows:
• “Sustainable Development — a Publisher’s Perspective” - Dr Ed Gerstner, Springer Nature
• “The British Library and Sustainable Development Goals” Scene setting on the British Library’s role in facilitating research from non-affiliated researchers, and connecting with SMEs – Philip Eagle, Content Expert, the British Library
• “Citizen Science in Schools for Environmental SDGs: an Overview of Best Practices” - Daphne describes how she teamed up with BBC Terrific Scientific to get primary students throughout the UK to collect data to model how spring onion growth is affected by temperature fluctuations - Daphne Ezer, Researcher, Alan Turing Institute

• “Participatory Citizen Science to Improve Autistic People's Lives” – Kirstie talks about the use of data science to address these challenges – Dr Kirstie Whitaker, Research Fellow Alan Turing Institute
• “Unlocking research data to power sustainable development and SMEs” - The huge potential of open research data will only become reality when sharing data becomes “business as usual” for researchers, and worth their time to do so. Beginning with an introduction to open data and the evidence for its value and potential, we’ll share researchers’ current attitudes and experience of data sharing, what motivates them and what is holding them back - Mark Hahnel, CEO Figshare
