Please find below a call for papers for the Research Group "*The pursuit of
perfection. Practices of self-enhancement as post-crisis utopias*" to be
held in the *XIV **Congresso Luso-Afro-Brasileir*o (CONLAB), 2-4 september
2020, Universidade de Coimbra: https://conlab.ces.uc.pt/.

The papers should be submitted in *portuguese *(the congress was designed
to be a place for exchange between researchers coming from
portuguese-speaking countries) to the coordinators of the panel by the *31th

A capacidade tecnológica de transformar a biologia - ligada aos avanços na
engenharia genética, na farmacologia, na bioengenharia, na cibernética e na
nanotecnologia - tem gerado nos últimos anos uma ampla variedade de
dispositivos de manipulação dos corpos e das principais funções humanas. O
mercado das biotecnologias de aperfeiçoamento dos seres humanos (estético,
cognitivo, sexual, anti-aging, etc.) é um dos mais ativos e rentáveis ao
mundo e a oferta da indústria do aperfeiçoamento é cada vez mais acessível,
mais económica e minimamente invasiva. A literatura internacional indica
que existe uma forte correlação entre o impacto de crises económicas e/ou
políticas, os imaginários utópicos pós-crise e o acréscimo do investimento
em práticas médicas, farmacêuticas e cirúrgicas desenhadas a alterar
características biológicas do indivíduo de forma a atingir a excelência. Da
produção de novos fármacos à manipulação do genoma humano, da cirurgia
plástica aos consumos de performance, as nossas subjetividades estão sendo
reformuladas na base de aspirações e desejos utópicos de ‘perfeição’ e
‘excelência’. A aspiração deste GT é relacionar o micro-estudo das práticas
de consumo das pessoas e das suas aspirações de aperfeiçoamento com o
perfil socioeconómico deste mercado emergente, ligado a formas
contemporâneas de biopolítica, novos conceitos de biocapital, e a novas
formas de bioeconomia.

As questões principais que este GT aborda, numa ótica comparativa, são:

Quais as principais utopias somáticas e tecnocientíficas dos contextos
pós-crise?

Quais os imaginários utópicos e distópicos ligados a redefinição do
‘humano’?

De que forma as práticas de aperfeiçoamento reconfiguram o corpo e a
subjetividade na base de utopias de sucesso e felicidade?

Quais as fantasias, as aspirações, e as práticas concretas de melhoramento
humano segundo variáveis de género, classe social, idade, nacionalidade e
etnia?

De que forma a transformação individual depende de e pretende provocar
alterações sociais estruturais?
Quais as implicações bioéticas e políticas das práticas e tecnologias de
self-enhancement?
