Research Assistant on the Cartographies of Cancer in Africa
The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine, King's College London, is seeking a Research Assistant for a British Academy-funded research project on epidemiological efforts to map cancer in sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, drawing on insights from science and technology studies, the project examines the socio-technical infrastructures and political rationales that underpin these efforts as well as the understandings of cancer and Africa that they help bring into being. The post holder will help the principal investigator carry out the archival and ethnographic research for this project. In particular, the post-holder will do some archival work in a few sites across London and carry out a one-month ethnographic study of the Kenyan National Cancer Registry in Nairobi. The post holder will also help with the data analysis as well as the writing up and publication of results.
The appointed person will have an undergraduate and a Masters degree in the social sciences or humanities. The post would especially suit someone currently doing a PhD in the social sciences or humanities. The appointed person will have a knowledge of qualitative social science research methods and some experience of doing research on health and/or development. Archival and/or ethnographic research skills as well as experience of working in Africa would be an advantage. A prior knowledge of and interest in the anthropology/geography of global health, science and technology studies and/or international development would be welcome but not required. The appointed person will also have excellent organisational skills, a strong ability to communicate and the aptitude to think critically.
The post can be carried out on a full-time (100%) or part-time (50%) basis. This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 8 months (full-time) or 16 months (part-time). Grade and salary: grade 5, spine point 26, £33,546 per annum, inclusive of £3,500 London Allowance per annum. Closing date to apply: 17 November 2019. Interviews will be held in late November.
