The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, runs a range of specialised training courses on practical, methodological and analytical topics for social researchers. These courses are available to students, researchers and lecturers at any stage of career and those working in a range of settings, including academic, applied, government and commercial. Update your skills and learn about new techniques with one or more of these intensive, practical high quality courses taught by staff from one of the leading social research methods centres in the UK.
Upcoming Day Courses Include
Introduction to Qualitative Interviewing (Wednesday 25 September 2019): Dr Sophie Sarre
This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative interviewing in both academic and applied social research. The course is primarily designed for researchers with little or no experience of qualitative interviewing. It will also be useful for more experienced researchers who have little formal training; or who wish to reflect on their practice. The course leader is a very experienced social researcher who will draw on her own research as well as established practice within the social sciences; and is happy to answer specific concerns of course participants. The day combines a brief introduction to theory; practical tips on recruiting, sampling and carrying out qualitative interviews; and practical exercises on developing an interview guide and carrying out a qualitative interview. We will explore a variety of ethical issues as they arise in discussion

Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis (Wednesday 30th October 2019): Dr Sarah Earthy
The training will focus mainly on the analysis of transcriptions of in-depth interviews. However, the approaches discussed can be applied to other types of qualitative data including focus groups. The course is primarily designed for researchers with little or no experience of qualitative analysis. It will also be useful for more experienced researchers who have little formal training; or who wish to reflect on their practice. The course leader is an experienced social researcher who will draw on her own research as well as established practice within the social sciences. She is happy to address specific queries raised by course participants. The day includes sessions on different approaches to analysing qualitative data, the principles of 'grounded theory' and the constant comparison method, the process of coding data and identifying key themes, and the development of more conceptual ideas through analysis. These sessions will be interspersed with practical exercises about different stages of analysis which provide participants with opportunities to analyse 'real' data. Other issues such as validity and generalisability in the context of qualitative analysis and the presentation of qualitative research findings will be discussed during the day.

Introduction to Discourse Analysis (Monday 18th November 2019): Dr Maria Xenitidou<https://www.surrey.ac.uk/people/maria-xenitidou>
The course introduces participants to discourse analysis starting from its philosophical underpinnings to recent developments and debates. It then presents and discusses various approaches as well as main principles and key literatures on discourse analysis. Finally, the course illustrates analytic tools through the use of examples and engages participants with hands-on analysis. The course has a dual aim: (i) to introduce participants to discourse analysis as a qualitative method in the service of analysing qualitative data (discourse) and (ii) to discuss discourse analysis as a paradigm. In this way, the course is a workshop focused on the analysis of discourse and also on the reasons for opting for discursive approaches while considering the assumptions they entail.

Introduction to Focus Groups (Wednesday 20th November 2019): Ms Katarina Zajacova
The course gives some theoretical grounding in order to define its purpose and place in the wider context of qualitative methodology, it establishes how FG differentiates from other qualitative techniques and covers its advantages and potential shortcomings. During the course, students will be given a lot of practical advice about how to run a focus group, with specific examples from various research projects. They will also have an opportunity to enrich their questioning techniques through interactive tasks and to take part in an exercise of running a focus group. At the end they will be provided with detailed feedback.
