Call for Papers

Panel Title: Socio-spatial Geographies of Masculine Violence

Conference: Latin American Studies Association, Guadalajara, Mexico, May
13-16, 2020

Discussant: Guillermo Núñez Noriega

Description: This panel seeks to increase understanding of the nexus
between masculinities and interpersonal violence. It resists notions that
men, in particular those racialized as nonwhite, are inherently violent by
drawing on ethnographic research carried out in Latin America. It
highlights the shifting circumstances within which men become the subjects
or objects of violence and perpetrators or victims of violent acts. The
papers to be included in this panel point toward expressions of
masculinities that shapeshift across space and time. Moreover, they focus
on the interplay of factors which, in addition to gender, configure the
distribution of violence. These include policing and other state
governance; space, place, and borders; non-normative identities, for
example expressions of gang affiliation or drug use; and social difference,
especially along axes of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability,
language, and nationality. As changing state practices, political and
economic regimes, social norms, and cultural meanings reshape Latin
America’s distinct social geographies, this panel aspires to trace how they
impact the fluid morphologies of masculinities and violence.

The panel asks: What practices, perceptions, processes, and logics shape
the ways men violently victimize others or are themselves violently
victimized? What role does violence play in emergent or transforming
masculinities? How does violence contribute to the gendering of not only
subject positions, but also of spaces and practices? In what ways is
violence used to police the boundaries of belonging in spaces gendered as
masculine? How do men navigate and shape the socio-spatial geographies in
which they live?

Please email questions or paper title (less than 25 words) and abstracts
(less than 250 words) in English or Spanish to Amir Mohamed (
[log in to unmask]), Cornell University, and Tobin Hansen (
[log in to unmask]), University of Oregon, by August 26, 2019.

We will respond as to the status of the panel by August 28, 2019.

[log in to unmask]), Cornell University, y Tobin Hansen (
[log in to unmask]), University of Oregon, para el 26 de agosto.
