Dear Allstat
The Royal Statistical Society invites you to the discussion of two papers on 'Signs and sizes: understanding and replicating statistical findings'
The papers will be presented at the Discussion meeting to be held at the RSS International Conference in Belfast on Wednesday 4th September, 5:20pm to 7:20pm.
The event will be chaired by our President, Deborah Ashby.
We'd be delighted if you were able to attend and/or contribute in writing to the discussion of one or both of the papers being presented:
Paper: 'Knowing the signs: a direct and generalizable motivation of two-sided tests'
Authors: K. Rice (University of Washington, Seattle), T. Bonnett (National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Frederick) and C. Krakauer (University of Washington, Seattle)
Paper: 'A new standard for the analysis and design of replication studies'
Author: L. Held (University of Zurich)
For more details and to download the preprints (pdfs) of these papers visit our website:

Please report to Registration to collect your badge.
There is no charge for anyone planning to attend only the Discussion meeting but you must let the conference team know on [log in to unmask] You can register for the conference at https://events.rss.org.uk/rss/270/home. Registration packages are available for the full three day conference, two days or a single day.
Contributing to the discussion
We welcome contributions to the discussion following the presentation of the papers. Please contact me on [log in to unmask] to reserve a speaking slot of 5 minutes and ensure your name is on the list to be called at the appropriate time. If you cannot attend, we would be happy to receive a written contribution from you of no more than 400 words in length (not including any tables, reference details and figures) for publication along with the paper in the journal, Series A. Please provide the following information at the beginning of your contribution:
* the author(s) and title of the paper(s) under discussion
* your name (including your title) and your affiliation, as you would wish it to appear on your printed contribution, e.g. Dr X, University of Y, City Z
* an email or full postal address where we can send the proofs of your contribution for checking (about 3 months after the meeting)
You do not have to submit your written contribution before the meeting but if you do and there is time it may be read out for discussion.
After the meeting, contributions may be submitted for publication by sending a PDF file direct to me at the Society's address before Wednesday, September 18th, 2019. This deadline is important to help the authors of the paper, who will consider all the contributions and compose a reply in limited time, and also for the production of the journal. A condition of publication of your contribution is that you assign copyright to the Society on the form that will be provided when we send you proofs to check.
