Postdoctoral position in molecular brain imaging/medical image analysis at the Molecular Neuroimaging Group (Dr. Michael Schöll), University of Gothenburg
Fixed term, 2 years
Apply by: 2019-07-30
Location:
University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine
The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. The Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry provides world leading translational research spanning cell and animal models to clinical studies and extensive epidemiological studies. Here, ground-breaking research in areas such as bipolar disorder, addiction medicine, aging, neurochemistry and psychiatry are conducted.
The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine is a newly established research centre at the University of Gothenburg supporting molecular and translational medicine in an effort to strengthen the life sciences in Western Sweden. Within this centre, the Molecular Neuroimaging Group under the lead of Associate Professor Michael Schöll provides excellent resources for advanced research projects in medical neuroimaging in collaboration with the Clinical Neurochemistry Laboratory at the Sahlgrenska Academy (Kaj Blennow/Henrik Zetterberg).
Subject area:
Molecular brain imaging/medical image analysis
Subject area description:
At the Molecular Neuroimaging Group, we focus on clinical research studies and method development employing novel and established positron emission tomography (PET) ligands in the study of brain aging, Alzheimer's disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders, combining molecular neuroimaging with fluid-based molecular assessments and clinical data. All projects are further part of local, national and international collaborations, involving a highly interdisciplinary team of world-leading researchers.
Job assignments:
The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects focussed on methodology for ligand-specific PET and MRI data processing, extraction and quantification of pathologic information from the imaging data, and studying this information in relation to clinical outcomes, genetics, and other imaging and fluid-based biomarkers. The post holder will have ample opportunities to work with existing PET and other phenotyping data from large-scale observational cohort studies of aging and neurodegenerative disease, as well as from ongoing dedicated studies in the lab that employ novel PET techniques in select patient populations. The candidate is expected to develop his/her own research projects and to actively engage in writing and publishing scientific articles, present the research at international conferences, and apply for extramural research grants. The post holder will be provided funds to attend scientific meetings and to spend parts of the postdoctoral period at collaborating laboratories.
The postdoctoral researcher will be mentored by Associate Professor Michael Schöll in close collaboration with Adjunct Researcher Michel Grothe (German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases).
Eligibility and Assessment:
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject such as neuroscience, medical imaging, biomedical engineering, or similar. The ideal candidate has a thorough understanding of multimodal neuroimaging, including MRI and PET-based techniques, a strong background in statistics, and experience with clinical research studies combining multimodal imaging data with fluid biomarker, clinical, and/or genetic assessments. Further requirements are proficiency in English at a scientific level, and a demonstrated record of strong scientific writing and presentation skills. Familiarity with coding/computing environments such as MATLAB, R, and Python is a plus. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.
Employment:
The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date is as soon as possible or as agreed.
