We are searching for an energetic and creative chemical physics theorist for a staff scientist position in our team at the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California. Apply for position 668246 at www.sandia.gov/careers.

On any given day, you will:
•	Design and carry out a basic science research program in fundamental theoretical chemical physics as part of a team of researchers funded by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences at the Department of Energy;
•	Publish in the open peer reviewed literature and presenting results at international conferences;
•	Propose and implement new scientific directions in consultation and collaboration with Sandia management.

We require the following:
•	Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or related area
•	Strong record of scientific productivity in computational and theoretical chemical physics, proven by publications in peer-reviewed literature
•	Experience working collaboratively in a multi-investigator multidisciplinary team
•	Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
       o	advanced electronic structure theory, especially for electronically excited states of molecules
       o	calculation of reaction dynamics, electron transfer or ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics in molecules
       o	interaction of strong light fields with molecules
       o	gas phase chemical physics for quantum information
       o	theoretical treatments of photoionization cross sections, electron attachment and autoionization dynamics

Expertise in either of the following areas will be an additional advantage:
•	domain-aware machine learning
•	theory for heterogeneous (gas-surface) systems
Experience in any of the following areas will be an additional advantage
•	responsibility for setting scientific direction for own work and/or that of others
•	successful mentoring or coaching of less experienced researchers
•	demonstrated success in proposal writing

The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work in a broad array of areas. Some of the main reasons we love our jobs:
•	Challenging work with amazing impact that contributes to security, peace, and freedom worldwide
•	Extraordinary co-workers
•	Some of the best tools, equipment, and research facilities in the world
•	Career advancement and enrichment opportunities
•	Flexible schedules, generous vacations, strong medical and other benefits, competitive 401k, learning opportunities, relocation assistance and amenities aimed at creating a solid work/life balance (benefits vary by job classification).

World-changing technologies. Life-changing careers. Learn more about Sandia at: http://www.sandia.gov

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a DOE security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance must be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
