Hi Helen
Many thanks for getting to me.
Just a bit more information on the project I'm doing. I'm doing my dissertation project as a work-based dissertation with a Scottish art gallery and museum and I'm trying to form a case study or case studies which assess the developments of this technology and create essentially a feasibility study based on that.
I've read through a few bits of literature during my project and there have been some successes. For example, I've access to a paper from March 2019 which details a case study involving the Rocca di Gradara museum in Italy in which the technology used was mostly successful but they do seem to have had similar limitations in the number of visitors downloading the app, having the phone on and having Bluetooth active at the time of the visit.
However, there are currently a couple of already existing potential solutions I've come across during my research.
https://smartify.org
- This is an app which is used particularly for art galleries which enables you to scan artworks and the app gives you information regarding said artwork. It is useful for classic artworks as it scans instantly and gives you information but what is also interesting is that it allows for tours around rooms as well. For example, there is a tour on the app involving the Royal Academy where Professor Mary Beard gives an audio tour of pieces within the museum based on ancient myths which is quite interesting.
The introduction of Web Bluetooth is also interesting as it essentially uses a Web browser instead of installing a native app. However, it is a relatively new technology at the moment and is currently a part of Google Chrome.
So if you have a spare 5-10 minutes would you mind answering a few initial questions based on this exhibition please?
What was the exhibition and the location where the technology was used?
How successful were the use of beacons with the exhibition and what factors led to its success or failure?
What are the critical success factors for the implementation of using Bluetooth Beacons within cultural organisations?
What are the characteristics of the installed systems and what are the associated costs?
How is the system received/perceived by visitors and staff?
Many Thanks and Kind Regards
Scott
